You’re invited to join in across 7th & 8th July at Newcastle City Library.
Poet in the City presents workshops and discussions celebrating the power of women, community, radical stories, and exploring everyday acts of social action.

Say It With Your Chest – manifesto writing workshop
7th July
Time 1 – 2pm
Manifestos aren’t just for politicians who play fast and loose with the truth, they are for everyone to help make sense of the world and to positively take back a little control over how you live your life. It’s a powerful way to pledge purpose and to share advice for living. Join poet Degna Stone for this manifesto-making workshop where through conversation and writing exercises together we will soon set our little corner of the world right.
Witch Trials – an audio experience, drop in
7th July 2pm – 6pm
8th July 12noon – 4pm
Drop in to enjoy an immersive audio play telling the story of some of the women who were executed as witches in Newcastle in 1650. This drop-in experience lasts 13minutes and is enjoyed through headphones. Made by Hellcat Theatre, a creative company that makes theatre with feminist leanings, working-class roots and with a North-East twist.
Screen reader support will be enabled, and a printed script will be available too.
Rebuilding the City Through Stories of Care – a listening, talking and making space
8th July, 10.30am – 12noon OR 12.30 – 2pm
What might a city that really cares about women look like? In this friendly space, created with artists Sophie Crocker and Georgia Bates, and hosted by Maddy Costa, women’s groups from east and west Newcastle share stories of care that will become the building blocks of a new model city: an alternative Newcastle that really cares about women. Join us for a listen, a cuppa, and to add your stories to a landscape changing before your eyes.
dare you: Question The Love Between Girls – screening and post film discussion
8th July, 2.30 – 3.30pm
Join emerging dance theatre company What’s That Dance for a screening of their short film; dare you: Question The Love Between Girls. Exploring discomfort, relentlessness and defiance, the film seeks to challenge the painful and uncomfortable parts that come with being a queer woman; to find joy in the sadness, tenderness and community. The screening will end with a discussion of the themes of the piece and what we can do to make women, particularly queer women, feel safe and cared for in our city.

The Witch Trials audio experience does not require pre-booking as it is accessible for 2 participants at a time, during the allotted times above. Please expect potential wait times of 5-10 minutes.
