Herstory – How To Get Involved
From a poetry competition to a call out for local protest memorabilia, there are lots of ways to be a part of Herstory. We’ll be posting all of the opportunities to get involved here in the run up to the festival, so check back or follow us on social media to stay up to date.

Wanted: Placards, Posters and Protest Memorabilia for the Protest Library!
Poet Ellen Moran is seeking your old placards, posters, programmes or other memorabilia stemming from protest experiences to form part of Protest Library – a mini-exhibition and performance space exploring women’s protest in the North East.
The items loaned will act as trigger points to inspire poetry and discussions about the experiences of rule-breaking lasses and prompt us to think deeply about what it means to stand up for your rights. Ellen is especially excited to receive objects from womxn and non-binary people, or from protests for womxn’s rights. The Protest Library will be presented at Herstory Festival on Wednesday 23 March at Newcastle City Library.
Objects can be loaned by dropping them off at the Newcastle Central Library on John Dobson Street – when dropping them off, please let the library staff know that the items will be part of the Herstory Festival. After being presented at Herstory on 23 March you will be able to collect your items during the following week of the event up until Friday 01 April. We are so grateful that you are donating your items and we will do our utmost to take care of them and return them to you in the same condition they were given to us. However, we do ask that you are aware that any items are left at your own risk as part of being presented as part of a public exhibition.
What a Woman! poetry competition
Be part of Poet in the City Producers Newcastle Herstory event What a Woman! by submitting your own poem about a woman who inspires you – the winning piece will be performed live on stage at Herstory on 23rd March, 3 winners will receive book vouchers, and a selection of submitted poems will be displayed at the event. The call for poems is open until Friday 18th March and the winning poems will be announced Monday 21st March.
From fictional heroines like Wonder Woman and Hermione Granger, to real-life superheroes like Greta Thunberg and Michelle Obama, to the everyday heroes in our families and communities, Poet in the City is celebrating brilliant women everywhere with the What a Woman! poetry event. As part of the show, our Producers in Newcastle are launching a competition for your poems that celebrate the lives, work and achievements of the women who inspire you. This is your chance to be a part of the What A Woman! event, with the winners having the option of either reading out their own poem or having one of our performing poets read it in front of the live audience at Newcastle Central Library
